FG to intensify biotechnology use for food production

The Federal Government has expressed its willingness to harness biotechnology and genetic engineering to guarantee food security and sufficiency in the country.

Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, made the disclosure on Tuesday in Abuja, while delivering an opening speech at a workshop organised by the National Biotechnology Development Agency, themed “Living Modified Organisms Detection and Identification”

The Minister stated that the Federal Government has made plans to exploit biotechnology and genetic engineering to enhance food security in the nation.

According to him, the Federal Government has noticed the essentiality of biotechnology and genetic engineering to the country’s developmental growth.

He further noted that the effective application of genetic engineering and biotechnology will boost local production of food, and as a result, minimize the need for continuous.
