The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Nomadic Education (NCNE), Mr Bashir Usman, revealed that the Federal Government is taking necessary steps to reconstruct grazing reserves into ranches in seven states in Nigeria.
Usman who said the existing grazing reserves had already been carved and demarcated, listed the states to include, Adamawa, Taraba, Plateau, Nasarawa, Benue, Kaduna and Zamfara State.
Speaking at the training workshop on remodelling exercise held in Zaria, Kaduna State, Usman stated that the exercise is going to aid the implementation of the National Livestock Transformation Plan (NLTP). He noted that the project is part of the Federal Government plan to transform and modernize the country’s livestock industry.
According to Usman, the NLTP programmes will include rehabilitation of displaced IDPs resulting from the conflict between farmers and herders, and the development of ranches in any willing state of the federation.
Speaking also, the Governor of Ebonyi State and chairman of the NLTP committee, David Umah who disclosed that the NLTP was a voluntary programme, added that any state interested in the programme was required to bring up a development plan.
“It is not compulsory, it is for any state that is willing to into the programme,” he said.
