Agro-commodity: Stakeholder advocates bespoke export policies

Managing Director of Wal-wanne Group, Dr. Abiso Kabir has called on the Federal Government to implement favourable agricultural policies that would transform Nigeria’s agro-commodity export narrative.

According to Kabir, the inability of farmers to meet relevant international standards on crops meant for export is responsible for the country’s struggles in exporting its agricultural produce.

The MD, who made this point in Abuja in a chat with newsmen, added that this challenge has impeded international trade relations between Nigeria and other countries.

“We are the largest yam growing nation, yet we export none. Ghana is taking the lead now in yam export”, he spotted.

Kabir further emphasized the need for Nigeria to up its game in exporting its agricultural products, so as to improve the standard of living of its citizens.

In his view, crude oil is not Nigeria’s chief economic resource, and there is a need to increase the country’s export numbers in order to generate more revenue and boost its GDP.

“The agricultural sector that gives rise to various products is also the base of the Nigerian economy. With the new mechanization in agriculture, we have increased output. Some of our products are exportable and they are of high demand, our products are highly nutritional”, he added.

The MD, however, reiterated his commitment and that of his organization towards repositioning agriculture in the country, while also promoting active youth involvement in the sector.
