The House of Representatives, during plenary today, demanded a halt to all investigations against Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB).
The resolution came after a motion on matters of urgent public importance was moved by the Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu.
The House, while endorsing Adesina for a second tenure, urged the Federal Government to rally support from other African countries so as to ensure his re-election for a second term.
Following the motion, Elumelu recounted Adesina’s contributions to the bank and Africa as a continent. He accused western countries of opposing Adesina’s re-election due to his afrocentric nature.
“Adesina has succeeded in investing in Africa and brought to bear the independence of the Bank as intended. This explains why the western countries are attempting to deny Nigeria the opportunity of leading the Bank for another 5 years”, he stated.
Speaking further, Elumelu said the House and Nigeria as a whole, need to send a concrete message to those involved.
A member of the House, Ossai Nicholas Ossai, while supporting the motion, urged the House to get copies of the AfDB’s Ethic committee, to defend the resolutions of the House.
He also stressed the need for the lawmakers to make pronouncements based on facts only.
“There is no African that will not support Adesina. When matters of international concerns are discussed, I prefer that we speak based on fact. We should get the report of the Ethics committee to be sure that we are speaking on fact,” he said.
