New Dams to Provide Irrigation Support for Farmers, Create 114,526 Jobs – FG

The Federal Government has revealed that it has boosted the irrigation sector and created over a hundred thousand jobs with the completion of 44 earth dams across the country.

The Amauzari, Amla Otukpo dams among others, will provide more irrigation support for farmers and have currently opened up 114,526 direct and indirect jobs.

President Muhammadu Buhari made this disclosure in his address to the nation on Friday, June 12, to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day.

According to President Buhari, his administration would ensure that irrigation and dam facilities are expanded to enable access to safe and sufficient water supply.

This, he divulged, would further stabilise the needed social, cultural, economic, and environmental development Nigerians crave.

Buhari in his speech, also revealed that the Federal Government has facilitated the planting of 25 million trees to stem the tide of the impact of climate change.

“The completion of Amauzari, Amla Otukpo and other 42 Earth Dams with combined job creation of about 43,354 direct jobs and 71,172 indirect jobs, would provide more support for irrigation agriculture and water supply.

“To further institutionalize our effort in this regard, I signed the Executive Order 009 on Ending Open Defecation in Nigeria.

“In order to improve our forest cover and in fulfilment of my commitment at the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in 2019, we have commenced the planting of 25 million trees.

“This initiative will also contribute to our effort to mitigate the effect of climate change,’’ the president told Nigerians.
