Benue Civil Servants to Farm Every Friday Until 2021

The Benue State Government has declared every Friday beginning from November 6 as work-free day for civil servants in the state.

The work-free day, scheduled to last until January 2021, is to enable the workers harvest their produce, the state government said.

Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Ngunan Addingi, explained that the declaration was part of the state government’s efforts to improve food security in the state.

A statement by the Special Adviser on Media and ICT to the Benue State Governor, Tahav Agerzua, read that the state’s executive meeting approved the work-free-day plan in 2016.

It further said that workers should use the last working day of the week for farming in the face of a dwindling economy that has made it difficult for the administration to pay salaries.

According to the statement, some workers in the education sector were exempted as the state government maintained that the school calendar would not be distorted.

Weekly work schedule for the civil servants is expected to revert to normal on February 5, 2021.
